Federal CIO Council -- Where Technology Meets Human Creativity (2002) View Page as PDF  View Page as Word  Printable View

Welcome

The Federal CIO Council is pleased to present this compendium of knowledge management resources and tools developed and compiled by the Federal Knowledge Management (KM) Working Group. The Federal KM Working Group is chartered under the Best Practices Committee of the Federal CIO Council. As an interagency body, the KM Working Group brings together representatives from across the Federal government to collaborate and share experiences on the content, process and technology needed to ensure the Federal community makes full use of its collective knowledge, experience, and abilities. The intent of this site (which has been built from content originally released on a CD-ROM) is to make the findings and products of the KM Working Group easily accessible and available to the Federal community at large, and to our partners in industry and academia.

The site provides the background and history of the Council, and the purpose and structure of the Federal KM Working Group. Special focus is placed on the role of the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) chartered under the Federal KM Working Group, to investigate and work specific topics and challenges associated with knowledge sharing and collaboration. The work products produced by the SIGs are included in this site, along with information about their purpose and objectives and resources that support the areas of focus. The current SIGs operating under the Federal KM Working Group are: Communities of Practice; Government-wide Communities of Practice; Content Management; KM Education, Learning and Development; KM.GOV Content and KM Technology; KM Stories; Public Policy and Outreach; and KM Surveys. Users will also find five other major information categories:

The Federal KM Working Group's vision is to be a resource and integrator for the Federal government as it takes greater advantage of its most important resource, the knowledge of Federal employees (human capital). The resources contained in this site are intended to move the KM Working Group toward this vision, and encourage the sharing, learning, and growing of knowledge throughout all levels of the Federal community.

About the Original CD

The Federal Knowledge Management Working Group (KMWG) produced this CD in conjunction with the U.S. Department of the Navy as a means to communicate and share with all government agencies the mechanisms, resources, stories, and tools available to advance the sharing, learning, and growing of knowledge throughout all levels of the Federal Community. The CD is a compendium of work products developed under the auspices of the Federal CIO Council with contributions that cross historic organizational boundaries. It provides best practices, tools, examples, and a valuable set of resources for fostering and facilitating knowledge management (KM) in the Federal government. All of the stories and examples included on the CD are taken from the sharing and collaborative efforts ongoing in agencies across the Federal government today.

The Federal government is acutely aware of the role that knowledge plays in transforming government - the way government transacts business, the relationships among government organizations and citizens, and the value placed on intellectual capital. Ultimately the discipline of KM will serve to a large extent as the foundation for creating a more efficient government better able to serve its citizenry.

The Federal CIO Council KM Working Group created this CD specifically for use throughout the U.S. Government and by organizations supporting the U.S. Government. Permission for use of material in this CD is granted to all government, industry, and academic organizations supporting the United States Government. Users are required to cite original sources of material quoted from this guide.

Special thanks and acknowledgement to the following individuals who gave generously of their time to bring the CD to fruition: John Andre`, Rod Atkinson, Alex Bennet, Mike Burk, Lee Canterbury, Jon Desenberg, Blane Dessy, Jill Garcia, Mrs. Ronnie Gerstein, Giora Hadar, Nat Heiner, June Huber, Elsa Rhoads, Wendy Stoner, Beth Serepca, and Gwen Sutton.
