Mission

Science and Engineering have historically required unique tools. The nature of scientific investigation is different from virtually all other fields. The "Web 2.0 for Federal Science and Engineering" group is being formed to maximize the benefit of Web 2.0 and similar technologies in support of scientific and engineering organizations. The focus will be on Federal research Labs working in basic research, applied engineering and modeling, and tech demo.

Method / Schedule

  1. (~ Apr-Oct 2009) -- Usage and Discovery. Group members will learn and apply Web 2.0 and related technologies. The idea here is just have fun and learn what's out there. Usage will not be restricted to work. Each group member will be called upon to learn, use, and report back to the team.
  2. (~ Jul-Dec 2009)  -- Application to Science and Engineering. The various Web 2.0 technologies will be evaluated in relationship to common processes in Science and Engineering.

                                          (see flowchart below)

  1. (~ Jan-Mar 2010) -- Recommendations. The group will report out in a format useful to leaders within Science and Engineering organizations in the Federal Government.

Membership

We are still recruiting new members. Ideally membership will be accross various federal agencies that are conducting research and engineering. We are especially interested in students and Gen-Y'ers who are already comfortable with many of these technologies. Please e-mail Richard Detsch to subscribe at richard.detsch@us.army.mil.
