C-8. KM Surveys

Purpose

The KMWG Survey Group coordinates and administers the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) KM survey within US Federal government. The OECD, headquartered in Paris, and the Institute for Knowledge Management (IKM) are jointly developing and administering an international survey on knowledge management practices, tools and infrastructure. This international survey is being developed to find out how knowledge management practices in "public management" affect the knowledge economy of the 30 member countries of the OECD. The OECD will compare KM practices in the same seven (7) major "ministries" or agencies across each participating member country.

The KMWG has negotiated with the OECD to allow an expanded KM Practices survey be conducted for US Federal agencies. The KMWG will have the advantage of participating in an international survey, as well as having a broad survey of US Federal agencies. One of the goals in the KMWG Charter is to "bring the benefits of the government's intellectual assets to all Federal organizations, customers and partners." The results of the KMWG survey will provide a baseline to track and measure the impact and growth of KM within the Federal government. The survey will also provide a look at KM implementation in the US in comparison to other countries around the world.
