NEEMO 14 Mission Day 13 and 14 May 25, 2010 12:01:02 PM | NASA Testing for Human Space Exploration

The topside team explain "saturation" diving performed by aquanauts during the NEEMO 14 mission and the need for allowing time for the aquanauts to decompress before returning to the surface. Day 13 is decompression time, and on Day 14 the topside team welcomes the NEEMO crew home, marking the end of their two weeks' stay in the Aquarius undersea habitat.

NEEMO 14 Mission Day 12 May 25, 2010 07:57:30 AM | NASA Testing for Human Space Exploration

The NEEMO aquanauts continue exploration of the Conch Reef on mission day 12, using the "flying" Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to track them as they went through mazes of coral. As the mission progresses, the aquanauts' sleep stability is monitored by Project CASPER in order to gather data important both for NEEMO missions and for spaceflight.

Mission day 10 brings more extravehicular activities (EVAs), this time with a 20-minute delay in communication simulating communication on a mission to Mars. The NEEMO mission gets some press coverage, as well as some great comments from school children who were able to take part in education and outreach.

NEEMO 14 Mission Day 9 May 20, 2010 01:37:57 PM | NASA Testing for Human Space Exploration

Today the NEEMO crew finished a series of underwater tests that determined how different amounts of weight, and the placement of the weight, affected their ability to perform tasks. Through video links, they connected to schools in Canada and Texas, and spoke to students about the value of analog testing and how diving compares to space walking.

What's a typical day on NEEMO? Extravehicular activities, monitoring divers, education and outreach, and.. demonstrating how potato chips, if they're not shipped to Aquarius correctly, end up as potato bits.

Mission week 2 presents new challenges as the team switches to a 20-minute delay in communications, similar to the delay they'd experience on Mars. The crew completed more EVAs, connected to schools through NASA's Digital Learning Network for a live webcast.. and made some silly hats for the evening's debrief.

In preparation for the Haughton-Mars Project in July, the international HMP team will drive the Moon-1 Humvee Rover across 200 km of frigid, snow-covered arctic barrens, including a critical stretch crossing 35 km of rough sea-ice filling the Wellington Channel. The challenging journey to Devon Island will take approximately two to three days, if the weather and sea-ice conditions are favorable.
