Peaks and Valleys
Jun 26, 2010 12:32:41 AM | Steven Gonzalez
-
- For those of us who will be able to carry on the dream of “boldly going where no one has gone before” let me offer the image above from Pat Rawlings. It is a perfect metaphor for the position that the agency currently finds itself and at the same time reminds us of the destination that the President asked us to reach in the mid 2035 time frame.

Can we Talk?
Apr 30, 2010 01:41:55 PM | Steven Gonzalez
-
- This week I had 4 different thoughts that I wanted to discuss and couldn’t decide which one to choose, but then realized that they were actually all connected. The connection actually lies in the title of a movie that my family experienced early in the week. “The Human Experience”

Ambidextrous Organizations: The Power of AND
Mar 28, 2010 03:27:46 PM | Steven Gonzalez
-
- Specifically for NASA the culture that ensures the safe return of our astronauts can hinder us from pushing the envelope and taking risks. By necessity we have been a culture of “Failure is not an Option” but now we are being asked to pursue initiatives where “Failure is a REQUIREMENT.”

Edutainment- Another way to inspire
Mar 08, 2010 08:38:07 AM | Steven Gonzalez
-
- There is much talk about the lack of a destination and how we need one to inspire our future generations but I think there is much to be said about making science, technology, engineering and math fun. Watching this crowd I think more will be inspired by their achievement in making a robot that will go to the national competition than a Mars mission by the end of this decade.

Pass the Baton or Short Track Speed Skater Push
Feb 19, 2010 06:18:24 PM | Steven Gonzalez
-
- As I watched the Winter Olympics this week I was struck with how it was a great metaphor for NASA and commercial space. I know it sounds like a stretch but let me explain. This week at the 13th Annual Federal Aviation Administration AST Space Transportation Conference, NASA’s Deputy Administrator, Lori Garver reiterated NASA’s commitment to transition access to Low Earth Orbit to the commercial community.

Out there. Thataway
Feb 05, 2010 12:40:56 PM | Steven Gonzalez
-
- Ok, my turn. Everyone and their sister have given their spin on the new NASA budget and the views have covered the full spectrum of the death of Human Spaceflight to the birth of a new era and the rebirth of robotic exploration. But before I weigh in on the discussion I first would like to take my hat off to all of my friends and colleagues that have given so much of their lives, energy and passion to support the congressional and presidential direction of the previous administration.

Made in NASA?
Jan 22, 2010 05:20:42 PM | Steven Gonzalez
-
- But it got me thinking about how much is associated with NASA and how much is not known about the true technology that comes from NASA.

Sustainability in Space = Sustainability on Earth
Jan 08, 2010 02:18:04 PM | Steven Gonzalez
-
- Yes, I am one of those that believe that “To boldly go where no one has gone before” is sufficient reason to invest in the human exploration of space and yet I also believe that the exploration of space should be tied to a noble purpose.

2010: Gotta Wear Shades!
Dec 22, 2009 01:22:12 PM | Steven Gonzalez
-
- Therefore when I look at 2010 I am excited by the change that is ahead of us. 2010 ends one era making room for the next generation of space vehicles.

How about NASA's Grand Challenge?
Nov 24, 2009 08:35:53 AM | Steven Gonzalez
-
- Yet, as I read the Strategy for American Innovation I was struck with what missing from the strategy, NASA. Other government agencies including the National Institute of Health, Department of Energy, and DARPA are mentioned but NASA is not found anywhere in the strategy.

Creating the Future: One Giant Leap at a time
Nov 12, 2009 07:07:43 PM | Steven Gonzalez
-
- I know it isn't really a vision statement, but the one phrase that has stuck with me is "Creating the Future: One Giant Leap at a time." I really like the way it sums up the spirit of NASA and honors our past at the same time.

Challenge Everything
Nov 02, 2009 08:38:04 AM | Steven Gonzalez
-
- There is an interesting experiment happening at JSC. The basic question being addressed by this experiment is “what would happen if we could tap into the expertise of the 15,000 employees at JSC to solve any one of the difficult challenges that we are wrestling with?”

Is it time to start the Federation?
Jun 26, 2009 06:09:30 PM | Steven Gonzalez
-
- The start of the Federation? Maybe or maybe the international crew currently on the International Space Station and the release of the movie this summer reminded me again of why I joined NASA 21 years ago.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress
Apr 13, 2009 05:25:34 PM | Steven Gonzalez
-
- My inspiration for getting into strategy development came from a Heinlein novel that a friend of mine recommended eight years ago. The story takes place on a thriving lunar society in the year 2076.

Making Money in Space
Feb 06, 2009 02:52:15 PM | Steven Gonzalez
-
- What role should NASA play in enabling space commerce? For me, the benefit for NASA would be greater infrastructure that NASA could leverage as it explores beyond LEO.

Innovator's Dilemma in Space
Dec 13, 2008 01:04:04 PM | Steven Gonzalez
-
- At the heart of the Innovator's dilemma is the concept that the success achieved by organizations from their original innovations makes it difficult for it to be innovative and creative in the future. f we applied the dilemma to Human Space Exploration it would state that what made us successful over the fifty years has focused the realm of possibilities within the context of our experience.

A Perspective from a Baby Boomer
Dec 13, 2008 12:57:53 PM | Steven Gonzalez

- For many in my generation it was the Apollo program or Star Trek that sealed our future with NASA. For me it was the original voyages of the Starship Enterprise.

Shift Happens
Dec 13, 2008 12:56:43 PM | Steven Gonzalez
-
- During the spring of 2008, quite a bit of activity had occurred that hint at a shift in the JSC community towards the Center Directors Vision. It has been exciting in so many arenas that I'm reminded of the line from the movie Princess Bride, where Mandy Patinkin tries to sum up the events that have transpired, "Let me 'splain.... No, there is too much. Let me sum up." So, to sum up...

It's Getting Crowded Out There
Dec 13, 2008 12:40:29 PM | Steven Gonzalez
-
- LEO will be getting crowded and we could either choose to compete in a crowded LEO or lead the International team to explore beyond LEO. Mr. Coats, JSC Center Director, decided that consistent with the Agency vision, we should begin focusing our sights on leading the integrated International team, comprised of both government and private industry to extend human presence beyond LEO.

Generations
Oct 03, 2008 01:05:42 PM | Steven Gonzalez

- The desire of the Next Gen to make a difference and to be in the center of the activity is the same spirit that filled the Baby Boomer and Generation X community when they arrived at JSC.

International Space: Space Race or Federation

Commercial Space: Is LEO about to get a little more crowded?
Sep 26, 2008 12:53:27 PM | Steven Gonzalez
-
- When asked about Commercial Space, one consultant from a company known for their scenario planning stated that he couldn't comment on their success, but he could state that the collective amount of discretionary funding available by the "New Space" community exceeds the NASA budget. With that amount of investment focused on one goal; it is only a matter of time before they are successful. So what are some of the investments being made outside of NASA?
