How do you measure "push," or in other words, force? The simple answer can be found through one of the most frightening household appliances any of us own: The dreaded bathroom scale…

Okay, I admit it: I'm a sucker for the Olympics. I watch with rapt attention to sporting events that I would otherwise never consider viewing other than under the once-every-four-years heading of the Olympics. Why is that?

J-2X Progress: A New Star on Our Horizon Dec 12, 2011 11:10:13 AM | William D. Greene

For weeks and weeks (or months and months really), we've been going on and on about the star of our J-2X project, development engine E10001. So, E10001 is unquestionably a star. Beyond this, however, we have other potential stars waiting in the wings. I would liken this situation to "American Idol" except that I've never actually seen that show and, further, all of our test articles are not in competition with each other.

I just got back a few days ago after a long weekend in Philadelphia where my wife's niece got married. In the midst of all these festivities, an analogy came to mind regarding J-2X -- well okay, perhaps not truly in the midst of the festivities, but certainly as part of the next-day hangover.

I give to you the J-2X Burp Test. No, that is of course not the official name. The official name is the "J-2X Ignition Test" or, even more formally: Test A2J001. That really rolls off the tongue doesn't it?

Everyone has in their personal histories certain events that they can look back on and say, "That's where things changed for me." Everyone has a history, a story. It is the narrative of how we come to be who we are. Believe it or not, rocket engines also have a life story of how they come to be.

It wasn't too many years ago that there was this thing about asking sports heroes after winning the big game, "So, what’s next?" They would always dutifully answer "I'm going to Disney World!" I guess that that whole thing is passé since I've not heard it in awhile, so I am going offer an alternative. Maybe it'll catch on and be the BIG THING this summer…
