When last I discussed with y'all the status of testing on the first J-2X development engine, I showed you a video of our first mainstage test. That was just over a month ago. So, what's been happening since then?

As I was driving to work this morning, I came up over a rise and saw suddenly appear in my windshield, over towards the left on the other side of the road, a police cruiser with a radar gun mounted in the window.

I give to you the J-2X Burp Test. No, that is of course not the official name. The official name is the "J-2X Ignition Test" or, even more formally: Test A2J001. That really rolls off the tongue doesn't it?

Everyone has in their personal histories certain events that they can look back on and say, "That's where things changed for me." Everyone has a history, a story. It is the narrative of how we come to be who we are. Believe it or not, rocket engines also have a life story of how they come to be.

J-2X Progress: Road Trip, Baby! Jun 13, 2011 10:52:29 AM | William D. Greene

It wasn't too many years ago that there was this thing about asking sports heroes after winning the big game, "So, what’s next?" They would always dutifully answer "I'm going to Disney World!" I guess that that whole thing is passé since I've not heard it in awhile, so I am going offer an alternative. Maybe it'll catch on and be the BIG THING this summer…

Alchemy isn’t practiced much these days. That's a shame. But there is little doubt in my mind that alchemy is exactly what is going on behind the scenes, deep within the dungeons of NASA as we develop a rocket engine.

J-2X Doghouse: The Rocket Equation! Wahoo! Mar 21, 2011 10:34:04 AM | William D. Greene

In response to a couple of early requests on this blog, I’d like to talk about rocket engine performance characteristics and how they relate to successfully getting off the planet and into orbit. Because this comes down to a matter of equations – and therefore at least half of the reading audience will click on their Facebook icon as soon as they see any equations – let me start with an old joke...
